WATCH: Jelena Ostapenko apologizes to an ‘upset’ Polish media representative after knocking Iga Swiatek out of the US Open
With this victory, Jelena moves on to the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Week 2 of the US Open started with a huge upset. Former World No. 1 Iga Swiatek lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the round of 16. Iga was playing the match with her title and her rank as number 1 on the line. She started well against Jelena, but the Latvian made an inspiring comeback by beating Iga.
During the post-match interview, Jelena apologized to an upset Polish media representative for beating the former champ. The media representative started asking Jelena a question by saying that he was upset that she had beaten the Pole and, to this, World No. 21 hilariously replied, “ I am sorry.”
It is natural for people supporting the defending champion to be a little upset, but the 26-year-old has done miraculously well to beat the Pole. The final score was 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Ostapenko made a sensational comeback that won many hearts. She was seen playing very aggressively against the defensive Swiatek. Her fiery spirit was no match for that of Swiatek and gave her an upper hand mentally to win the game.
Jelena Ostapenko beats Iga Swiatek in a big game to advance to the quarterfinals
With this victory, Jelena moves on to the quarterfinals of the US Open. Iga Swiatek has now lost her number-one spot to Aryna Sabalenka, who has been desperate to rise. This is just one of the major upsets in the US Open and a victory against a formidable champ puts Jelena in a position to win the title.
However, her next opponent is the young Coco Gauff. Gauff, with the help of her coach Brad Gilbert, has been peaking rapidly. She is fresh off her victory against the returning champion Caroline Wozniacki and looks to maintain her dangerous form. To beat the in-form Gauff, Jelena has to be at her best and make little to no mistakes in the game.
As the US Open started its week two matches, Week 2 of the US Open is underway revealing the big names that can win the title. There are a few Americans in the run and it would be huge if one of them managed to win the tournament.
