Jelena Ostapenko
Latvian tennis star Jelena Ostapenko has been in news because of some of the heated moments with her rivals during the matches. The 25-year-old is not known to be one of the friendliest players on the tour. And now she has revealed her feelings about the rivals she does not like.
Ostapenko has a Grand Slam title in her bag which she won at the 2017 French Open. She has achieved a career-high of world No. 5 in singles. In addition to her singles career, she has played as a member of the Latvia Fed Cup team. She admitted to being always extra motivated to beat an opponent she “does not like.”
Ostapenko sat down with ClayTenis for an interview and opened up about various issues. On being asked about how some beef with a rival during the match affects her, the 25-year-old was aggressive in response. She revealed how her mindset changes and how she becomes even more concentrated.
“When I play against someone, a girl I don’t like, I really want to beat her,” Ostapenko said. “It makes me want to leave everything on the court. For players, it can work in different ways if you don’t like anyone and it’s like your “enemy”. Some would be distracted, emotional, and angry very quickly. I am the kind of person who becomes even more concentrated in this kind of situation. ”
Ostapenko has earned a reputation for not being the most likable player on the Tour
Despite being a relatively successful player, Ostapenko has earned a reputation for not being the most likable player on the Tour. Many of her rivals have openly criticized Ostapenko for her attitude also. Former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki earlier revealed she “once practiced with Ostapenko and never again.” Most recently she clashed with Danielle Collins during a match in Abu Dhabi.
But Ostapenko does not seem to be bothered about that. ClayTenis asked about the same. “It’s not that I enjoy it. I just try not to waste my energy on things that I shouldn’t. Once I’m on the court I try to be focused on myself, not see what’s happening around me, and not get distracted,” she replied.
Ostapenko is currently competing in Dubai after having a poor show in the Qatar Open earlier. In the Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinal round where she lost to Elena Rybakina. As the season progress, Ostapenko is hoping to avoid distractions and make the best of the opportunities she gets.
