Carlos Alcaraz enters the final Grand Slam of the year at the Flushing Meadows as the defending champion and the top seed. As such, there is huge pressure on his shoulder to deliver again at the 2023 US Open. Recently, the Spaniard called Michael Jordan the ‘GOAT’ in his pre-tournament press conference on Saturday.
Carlos Alcaraz was spotted wearing a Michael Jordan jersey and hat earlier this week in New York. The 20-year-old was asked by one of the reporters if he was an avid fan of the Basketball great. The Spaniard has developed close ties with the sport off-late, as he is a good friend of another Basketball star Jimmy Buttler.
Carlos Alcaraz stated that Michael Jordan was certainly up there among the greatest of all time. He admitted that he was a big fan of the American, and also pointed out his fashionable dressing sense. “Well, I started to follow the NBA not too far ago. Obviously I hear a lot about basketball, about NBA. I didn’t watch it so much. Obviously I’ve watched a lot of videos. Everybody knows Michael, what he did to the game,” said Alcaraz in the press conference.
Carlos Alcaraz admits to being a ‘huge fan’ of Michael Jordan
Carlos Alcaraz admitted his admiration towards Michael Jordan. The 60-year-old is regarded as the greatest player in the history of the sport, as he has won the NBA title on 10 occasions. He has also claimed the Olympic gold medal on two occasions with Team America.
“He was something unbelievable. I am a huge fan of him, huge fan of his clothes as well, as you can see. I’m not going to talk about the G.O.A.T. (smiling). Is not a doubt that he’s one of those,” said Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz has been handed a pretty tricky draw at the 2023 US Open. The Spaniard kicks off his campaign against Dominik Koepfer of Germany in the first round. Things could get tougher for the defending champion in the second week, as he could face Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals, and 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
Carlos Alcaraz will look to avenge his defeat in the Cincinnati Masters final, as a mouth-watering final with Novak Djokovic is well on the cards. The duo locked horns against each other in the finals of the Cincinnati Open last week, where the Serbian came out on top in a grueling four-hour battle.
