Andy Murray faced a heartbreaking second-round exit from the 2023 Championships on Friday. The Briton was defeated by the fifth-seeded Greek, Stefanos Tsitsipas in a five-set thriller that was stretched to two days. Former American tennis player John McEnroe believes that Andy Murray’s wife should urge him to retire after his early Wimbledon exit.

The three-time Grand Slam champion refused to comment on his retirement status after his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas. The veteran stated that he would like to keep playing on the tour, although losses like these do not help his cause. John McEnroe believes that perhaps the time has come for his wife to step up, and urge Andy Murray to draw curtains on his tennis career.

I don’t know if the missus will put her foot down a little bit like ‘Hey, I need some help at home‘. “When the top guys usually get to that point it’s hard to keep playing,” McEnroe said on Murray’s rankings. His love for the game, he loves it so much he loves to compete. Maybe he needs some sleep, I’ve got six kids he’s got four now – trust me, when you play tournaments you get more sleep,” he added.

John McEnroe believes that Andy Murray is among the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen. However, his physical fitness has taken a beating over the past couple of years due to his struggles with injury. Nevertheless, the American believes that Murray is an incredibly disciplined player when he is fully fit.

“He probably has to do even more for the body to keep it at a point where he feels at least that he can compete, this is one of the great movers – one of the top 10 movers I have ever seen in the sport, who is not as quick or explosive. Obviously he is fit, there is no question about that he has always been incredibly dedicated,” he added.

Andy Murray’s second-round battle with Stefanos Tsitsipas continued into the following day, as the Briton led 2 sets to one at the end of play. However, the fifth seed came out all guns blazing on the second day, as he cruised into the third round of the Championships for the second consecutive year. For Murray, this is his second consecutive exit from the second round of Wimbledon, as he was defeated by John Isner in four sets last year.
