Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic find themselves in another debate as the 2022 ATP season is about to end. Both the legends of the game have won a Grand Slam this year, again, having had issues and setbacks of all kinds. While Nadal continued to fight his foot injury, Djokovic was affected due to other factors.

With the Serb staying firm on his personal decision of not taking the Covid-19 vaccine, he was denied to enter Australia and USA. As a result, he missed the Australian and the US Open while also being forced out of Indian Wells, Miami and Cincinnati Masters due to the same reason.

While this reason was not enough, Djokovic’s win at Wimbledon this year did not grant him points but rather took away all of them. Wimbledon did not allow Russian and Belarusian players due to the ongoing Ukraine War and as a result, ATP and WTA decided to remove ranking points from this year’s Wimbledon while taking away all points from last year.

Nadal on the other hand, won the French Open with painkiller injections on his leg that numbed his foot in all matches after the 1st round. At Wimbledon, he looked on course for his second title but an abdominal tear ruled him out on the eve of his semi-final match. With both players having their share of troubles, it became a raging issue on who was the better one this year.

Journalist Jon Wertheim‘s reply to Lee Abbamonte on Twitter sparked a big row between fans of the two players. Abbamonte had tweeted, “He basically missed out on 10,000 possible points this year with the 3 majors and 4 masters he couldn’t play. He would easily have been 1 again this year and it wouldn’t have been close. Extremely impressive nonetheless.”

Wertheim then replied, “The guy – by choice – missed two of the four majors… And makes a strong case MVP for 2022. Without turning this into a referendum/culture war front on science/rugged individualism , can we agree this was one of the stranger winning seasons in Tennis history?”

Fans were quick to prove their favorite player’s case and also to criticize the journalist. To make things worse, Djokovic and Nadal have played only once this season, the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros. Nadal came out on the top in 4-sets to knock the defending champion out. Djokovic still leads the head-to-head with a 30-29 record.

While the fans can continue to argue and debate on the issue, both Nadal and Djokovic have left the debate. Both players have time and again admitted to not being bothered by the race between them but instead put in the hard work for personal glory and let records chase them.
