Juan Martin del Potro was on the verge of giving up his professional career in tennis after a series of injuries and surgeries throughout his career. However, Argentina’s famous win in the 2022 FIFA World Cup has ignited new hopes in the Argentine tennis professional to enter a Grand Slam tournament one more time.

Juan Martin del Potro played his last match in the Argentina Open 2022 where he lost to Federico Delbonis in the first round of the tournament itself. However, the way Lionel Messi, who is almost the same age as the 2009 US Open champion guided the Argentina football team to win the World Cup has inspired him. Hence, del Potro is thinking of playing in the US Open 2023.

“If Argentina won the World Cup, I would try to play the US Open. Now Messi and the team put me to train. I still have a lot of pain. Before Qatar I didn’t have it in mind, but now I think about it a lot,” he said as he plans to participate in the US Open 2023.

Juan Martin del Potro and The Big Three

The Argentine tennis professional dreamt of becoming World No.1, however, he could not claim that spot ever in his career. The reason, according to him was the prowess of The Big Three- Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The three players were at the peak of their game. The highest-career ranking he ever achieved in his career in ATP singles rankings was the World No.3 in August 2018.

Was to be number 1 in the world. It was always a dream and I worked to be the best, but I am also super proud of my career. I never managed to be number one because Nadal, Federer or Djokovic were there. When I look at the ranking or see the years of my career and with whom I was fighting to be number one, it’s also very nice to know that they were the ones who didn’t let me achieve that dream,” he continued.

He also added that he does not believe that the phenomenon of The Big Three could ever be repeated in the sport.

“Something similar to the Big Three will not happen again,” he said.
