“Luck was on my side,” Daria Kasatkina recalls the Wimbledon match that led to Ash Barty’s transformation
Daria recalls her Wimbledon win against former world No.1, Ash Barty as the Australian gave a special place to that match
Daria and Ash
Former world No.1, Ash Barty wrote in her book about a particular match that changed the course of her career and made her compete at the top. It was Wimbledon 2018 and Daria Kasatkina was up against Ash Barty. According to the seedings, Daria was the better player then, seeded 14th while Barty was 17th. Daria won the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-3.
Barty after her exit in the third round of Wimbledon transformed herself into the top player and also won multiple Grand Slam titles in women’s singles. It was her rock bottom in her career and that loss only helped Ash to achieve what she achieved today. She ended her career last year after winning last year’s Australian Open. Ash called for retirement and ended her career on a high note. She is currently pregnant but still actively participating in many events across the country.
A Eurosport journalist asked Daria Kasatkina about this incident from Barty’s book and she replied by saying “I remember that match. I would be with the same attitude because she had 7 or 8 break points so I know how she was feeling. It was a good match.”
Daria laughs and continues talking about that match and says “Luck was on my side that day so I understand what she means. Everyone can say thanks to me because after that Ash was a big pain in the a** for everyone. It’s me!!.”
Daria Kasatkina looks for a strong comeback
The 25-year-old Daria Kasatkina started 2023 well by reaching the finals of Adelaide International 2. She lost to Belinda Bencic in straight sets. She entered Australian Open as the eighth seed. However, she suffered a shocking defeat in the first round against an unseeded player, Varvara Grachev. Daria has some big wins last year as she won against the American, Coco Gauff in the group stage of the WTA Finals.
She had very poor results in other tournaments losing to other players in the initial rounds. However, Daria looks to gain her momentum again and get some confidence before heading into the Roland Garros. As a part of this, she is set to play the Abu Dhabi Open which is starting later today. The Russian looks to make it count and gain some points before heading further into the season.
