Marta Kostyuk with other Ukrainian players is trying hard to build pressure on WTA and ATP to ban players from Russia and Belarus from playing on the tour. Also, they want to highlight the difficult state in which Ukraine is in and the unimaginable hardships the people have to face in their everyday lives.
Recently, she talked about a video that she saw during the ATX Open in Austin. She won this tournament beating Russia’s Varvara Gracheva in the final. She not only refused to shake hands with the Russian tennis professional, but also did not pose for photographs with her. When she won the final, she gave a loud shout and saluted “Glory to Ukraine”.
Meanwhile, in the video, a Ukrainian soldier was seen digging his own grave before being executed and killed. His last words were “Glory to Ukraine”. This video, in her own words, made Marta Kostyuk sick and paralyzed for three days.
“A series of shocking events just float past me. But there’s one that’s completely overwhelmed and paralyzed me. It made me sick for three days. When I won the trophy in Austin, I said in my thank-you speech, ‘Glory to Ukraine!’ And then I saw a video of our soldier digging his own grave and saying the same salute. Whereupon he is executed. He was killed for using the same words that I used,” the world No.33 is reported to have said by the British newspaper The Express.
