Despite her recent defeat against Iga Swiatek in the China Open semifinal, it cannot be denied that Coco Gauff had a phenomenal season in 2023. She was in the form of her life throughout the season, and her victory in the 2023 US Open final came as a cherry on top as it was her first-ever Grand Slam win.
Tennis legend and 18-time Grand Slam title winner Martina Navratilova recently praised Coco in her interview with WTA and stated that the teen had finally ‘cracked the code’ of winning.
Martina Navratilova said that Coco Gauff has figured out how to win even when she is not playing her best tennis. This is only possible because the 19-year-old has more clarity now with her game plan, which takes her off the hook. Her recent success in the 2023 US Open definitely added to her confidence, which is working in her favor as well.
When things don’t go well you can get nervous and panic and say, ‘Oh my God, what do I do?’ But when you have a plan, you know whether it’s working or not. If it works, you stick with it and if it doesn’t, obviously you can change it.Said Navratilova via WTA Tennis
She further went on to say that Coco Gauff has a really good chance of winning the WTA Finals.
But that’s what that clarity gives you -- a lot of confidence. So then weaknesses are not so weak anymore, and you just get on with it. And that’s what happened at the Open. She knew what she had to do to win the match.
Coco Gauff’s aim at glory at the WTA Finals
If there is one player who has shined brighter than the rest in the 2023 season, it is Coco Gauff. It was without a doubt a career-defining year for her. Everyone knew that the youngster had potential, but she finally proved that to everyone in 2023 and is now one of the top 5 players in the world.
Coco is the third-ranked player in the world currently and also the third seed in the 2023 WTA Finals. Last year, she was the fourth seed in the same tournament. Although Coco does not have a chance of becoming the year-end World No. 1, she is definitely one of the favorites to win the tournament alongside Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka.
