Martina Navratilova and George W. Bush

Former tennis legend Martina Navratilova is one of the greatest champions of the game. She was an active player in four different decades, with her career spanning from 1974 to 2006, and won 18 major titles in singles, 31 titles in doubles, and 10 titles in mixed doubles. She has been upfront about her sexual orientation, along with a lot of uncertainty about her citizenship.

She was initially stripped of her Czech citizenship in 1975 after fleeing her home and country. Six years later, she was awarded American citizenship, with George W. Bush being the main reason. She achieved dual citizenship back in 2006. But she had once expressed her unhappiness towards Bush’s government for not showcasing equal rights for gay and lesbian individuals. She has been an active socialist while fighting for equal rights for gay and lesbian people and for gender equality.

During an interview on CNN’s Connie Chung Tonight show in 2002, she admitted to accusing the then President of America of showing differential behavior for gay and lesbian individuals. She further admitted that life in the US was way much more difficult and tough as compared to a lesbian staying in Europe.

Navratilova was quick to reply to the accusations by the host stating she was un-American. She in reply said, “When I see something that I don’t like, I’m going to speak out because you can do that here. And again, I feel there are too many things happening that are taking our rights away. I think athletes have a duty to speak out when there is something that’s not right and when they feel that perhaps social issues are not being paid attention to. As a woman, as a lesbian, as a woman athlete, there is a whole bunch of barriers that I’ve had to jump over, and we shouldn’t have to be jumping over them anymore.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion never shies from voicing out her opinions upon finding something incorrectly happening or is against her principles. She uses her social media account on Twitter as a medium to showcase her freedom to put forth her views and does not ever budge away from receiving any sort of hatred due to her harsh words. The former Wimbledon champion is equally involved with issues related to political agendas, especially taking a sly dig against Donald Trump for his misogynist remarks.

But, this time Martina Navratilova took to Twitter to take a sly dig at Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi when he attended an event to flag off a train a few hours after the tragic collapse of a bridge that took away 130 people and left many injured. The bridge was built in 1875 and despite recently done maintenance; the structure collapsed in a freaky accident, with a vast crowd standing on top of the hanging bridge. Martina Navratilova slammed Mr. Modi for his choice of giving importance to the turnout of events and the contrasting seriousness of both situations.
