Tennis great Martina Navratilova has once again slammed the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for maintaining that all transgender athletes should be allowed to compete in professional sports only with the condition of self-identification and no mitigation was required.

On Sunday, Navratilova expressed her surprise at ACLU’s stance, adding it had “really gone sideways” with its policies. The 65-year-old also questioned why ACLU Comms Strategy officer Gillian Branstetter had blocked her on Twitter despite no direct interaction between the two.

“Well, the @ACLU, thanks mainly to Chase Strangio, has really gone sideways when it comes to sports and trans women competing- they will only accept full inclusion for trans women to compete, no mitigation, only self ID necessary. How crazy is that? Yup, this crazy,” Navratilova wrote on her Twitter profile.

Navratilova has been vocal on the subject of free transgender inclusion in professional sports in the recent past and some have even criticized her for ‘bigotry’.

In fact, the former tennis player also routinely casts her opinion on other social issues, having recently compared US anti-abortion laws to the treatment of women in Iran.

In terms of tennis, Navratilova recently also paid a glittering tribute to Roger Federer whilst he announced his retirement at the 2022 Laver Cup.

“Roger, enjoy your life after tennis. Thank you for being a part of this amazing sport, a massive part of it. You made it look so easy. It was a pleasure knowing you, it was a pleasure watching you play. I am looking forward to the next chapter in your life,” she said.

On Sunday, the 2022 Laver Cup concluded in stellar fashion with Team World winning their first-ever title in the fifth year running. Frances Tiafoe sealed a memorable win for Team World with a tight win over Team Europe’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The event was probably one of the most sought-after editions in the event’s history, with the Big 4 all present and part of Team Europe i.e. Djokovic, Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray. The first day of the event on Friday saw Nadal and Federer teaming up for doubles.

Navratilova also praised Nadal for keeping aside his pain and injury to take part in the Laver Cup especially to be part of the Swiss maestro’s farewell.
