Martina Navratilova, the former tennis player, and activist, recently shared a tweet expressing her concern about the decision of Texas Governor Greg Abbott to consider pardoning U.S. Army sergeant Daniel Perry, who was convicted of the murder of Austin protester Garrett Foster in 2020.
After an eight-day trial, a Travis County jury found Perry guilty of murder for shooting and killing Foster, who was part of a group protesting police brutality and was armed with an AK-47. Perry, who was working as an Uber driver, encountered the protest a few blocks from the Capitol in downtown Austin.
Despite the verdict, Governor Abbott, under pressure from conservatives, directed the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles to expedite the review of Perry’s conviction. The Governor cited the Texas Constitution, which requires the parole board to recommend a pardon before he could act.
Navratilova shared her concern about the situation on Twitter, saying “This is exactly right. Abbott wants open carry but then we are free to shoot anyone open-carrying and claim self-defense?!? And then get off ?!?” The tennis legend’s tweet reflects her concern about the implications of the decision to pardon Perry and the impact it could have on gun laws in Texas.
The debate over gun laws in Texas has been ongoing for years, with the state being known for its liberal gun laws. The state recently passed a law that allows Texans to carry handguns without a license or training, which has faced criticism from gun control advocates. Navratilova’s tweet has sparked a discussion on social media, with many people sharing their opinions on the decision to consider pardoning Perry.
Some have expressed support for the Governor’s decision, arguing that Perry acted in self-defense, while others have criticized the move, saying it sends the wrong message about gun laws in Texas.
