Carlos Alcaraz has already made a stamp on the sport at the age of 19. The World No.1 recently clinched the Indian Wells Masters, assisting his rise to the position yet again. Alcaraz made his mark after winning the US Open last year. He is also the youngest No.1 player in tennis history, surpassing the Big Three in other areas as well.

Mats Wilander recently dived into the youngster’s prospects at the 2023 French Open. Wilander asserted that Alcaraz might face a significant struggle in his interview with Eurosport. Alcaraz still has to improve on his clay court play in order to triumph against the likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, according to the Wilander.

Wilander also stated that it is ‘nearly impossible’ to keep up with Nadal and Djokovic on clay. He elaborated, “Can he keep coming up with shot after shot, choice after choice,” deeming it a challenge for Carlos. With both champions determined to come out with 23 Grand Slam wins, the venture could be something to look out for for the World No.1.

No player has ever beaten both Nadal and Djokovic in a single French Open tournament. In order to excel, Alcaraz needs to assimilate his skills on the clay. Alcaraz has, nevertheless, won 5 clay court titles. According to Wilander, he is ‘too fast for a slippery clay court’, and the joint title holders are experts are figuring out their opponent’s weaknesses.

Furthermore, Wilander thinks, “He’s got a little bit of a way to go to me to be a very big threat to win Roland-Garros if he has to play both Nadal and Djokovic.” In case of an injury, Alcaraz has the chance to win the final, opined Wilander. Alcaraz will win in Paris someday, but he needs to familiarize himself with five-setters to achieve the feat.

Carlos Alcaraz to face Facundo Bagnis at the Miami Masters

After his triumphant stint in Indian Wells, Alcaraz has set sights on winning the Sunshine Double. Alcaraz has entered the second round in Miami. He is set to face Argentine, Facundo Bagnis in the next match. The duo faced each other at the Croatia Open last year, where Alcaraz won in straight sets.

They also competed against each other before turning pro. In each encounter, Carlos has come out on top. Alcaraz is definitely favored to win the match and proceed into the third round. The match will take place on Saturday at 9.35 EST.
