“We did everything we could,” Miami Masters director expresses regret over Novak Djokovic’s failure to get exemption
Djokovic will not play at the prestigious Miami Open, following his absence at the Indian Wells tournament as well
Novak Djokovic‘s unvaccinated status has led to many obstacles for the World No.1 player. Djokovic previously faced deportation issues and a potential ban from the Australian Open in 2022. Currently, the US covid-19 policy probits his entry into the country, despite claims by the president that the pandemic was ‘over’.
As a result, the Serb missed the Indian Wells tournament. The Miami Open tournament director declared that he will also be unable to contend for the Masters title yet again. The player has not played there since 2019. James Blake, the director, claimed that they tried everything in their power to convince the authorities.
The restriction will likely disappear on May 11 when the administration stops its COVID-19 emergency proclamation. Djokovic has previously expressed his reluctance to receive the vaccine, and would rather miss tournaments. To make up for his absence, the 22-time Grand Slam champion hopes to win a record-breaking US Open title this year.
James Blake lamented Djokovic’s lack, stating that the tournament officials tried their best to provide an exemption. Despite multiple requests, they failed to do so. Fans have also shown their disapproval regarding the absurd rule. Being one of the best players, with a large fanbase, Novak was a crucial component of the tournament.
When will Novak Djokovic resume his 2023 season?
Djokovic has only played three tournaments in 2023 so far. After his winning stint in Australia, where he equaled Rafael Nadal for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history. The historic win came along with another controversy. Djokovic was rumored to have a ‘fake’ injury in order to trick players. These allegations were denied by the Serb and his coach.
Djokovic went on to play in the Dubai Tennis Championships. He reached the semi-finals in Dubai. However, he lost to the 2021 US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev. Consequently, the 35-year-old lost his extensive winning streak since last year. Medvedev went on to win the ATP 500 title in Dubai.
The Serb is reportedly set to return after taking a short break. He had hoped to play the Sunshine Double but was not given an exemption. Djokovic will play at Monte Carlo next, to start off the clay season. The player is prioritizing the French Open as well.
