Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion had a poor and late start to the season losing all his seven matches in the first round after returning from an injury for which he was out of action for quite some time. He had an early exit at the French Open and did not participate in Wimbledon in order to get some time before the hard-court season begins and not give much stress to his recovered injuries.

He missed most of the hard-court tournaments due to an illness that forced his withdrawal. He had participated at the Winston-Salem Open and had made it through the third round. He participated after two years since his title win at US Open but was short-lived following a first-round exit against Pablo Carreno Busta. He put a commendable performance making his way onto the finals of the Open de Rennes event.

Richard Gasquet, the Frenchman and finalist of 2004 at the Moselle Open is still a strong competitor to the young generations but has failed to reach the final stages of the competition lately. His best result of the season has been at the Geneva Open where he reached the semi-finals. He has also reached the semi-finals of four different ATP events but his performances at the Grand Slam tournaments have not been up to the mark.

Thiem has managed to rediscover his form heading into the tournament and is feeling confident after his successful stint at Rennes, France. Both the players have great one-handed backhand skills but Thiem will be looking to continue his momentum for another successful stint at another ATP event and slowly climb up the ladder to better his overall rankings.

Even though Gasquet is a decent player, his current lack of form and inconsistencies may be overpowered by the Austrian but if he manages to make fewer mistakes, then there could be a chance for the Frenchman. It will be interesting to see if Gasquet can manage to continue the lead in their head-to-head clash statistics as this will be the fourth instance where they will be playing against each other with Gasquet having the upper hand as 2-1.
