Every tennis season consists of four Grand Slam tournaments, also known as Majors. It provides the highest ranking points, and prize money and draws the most attention from all over the world. The first Grand Slam is the Australian Open followed by the French Open, Wimbledon, also known as The Championship. And it ends with the US Open in New York.. The men’s singles matches are best of five sets and women’s is best of three sets.

The Australian Open and the US Open are hard court tournaments, French Open is a clay court event and Wimbledon is played on grass courts. Before 1988, the Australian Open was a grass court event. The Australian Open is played for two weeks at the Melbourne Park. It features men’s and women’s singles; men’s doubles, women’s doubles as well as mixed doubles; junior’s championships; and wheelchair champions, legends, and exhibition events.

The Australian Open is managed by Tennis Australia, formerly the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia (LTAA). It was first played at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne in 1905 (117 years ago) as the Australasian Championships. It became an Open professional competition in 1969. The Australian Open 2023 will take place from January 16 to January 29, 2023. This is the 111th edition of the prestigious event. Twice the tournament did not happen was during the two World Wars.

Novak Djokovic is the most successful player with a collection of nine titles. Margaret Court won the tournament 11 times – 7 times in Amateur Era and 4 times in the Open Era. Rafael Nadal defeated Daniil Medvedev to win his second title Down Under and 21st Grand Slam title overall this January. In the women’s final, , Ashleigh Barty defeated Danielle Collins to clinch the women’s singles title.

Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have won the men’s Australian Open doubles title six times. Leander Paes has won the mixed doubles Australian Open title 3 times, once each with Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, and Cara Black. Shingo Kunieda has won the men’s singles wheelchair event 11 times. He has also won the men’s doubles wheelchair event 8 times. David Wagner is another champion who has won the men’s doubles wheelchair event 9 times.

The Argentine has won two times at the Australian Open out of the 3 consecutive finals played. He defeated John Marks to win his first title in Australia in 1978. Guillermo Vilas successfully defended his title by defeating American John Sadri in the finals to win his second title.

John Newcombe – 2 Australian Open titles

He is one of the fairly successful players in the tournament. John Newcombe reached three finals which were in the years 1973, 1975, and 1976. The Aussie defeated Onny Parun to win his first title in Melbourne. He beat defending champion Jimmy Connors in 1975 to win the second title in Australia. But the 7-time Grand Slam winner lost the finals in 1976 to his compatriot Mark Edmondson.

Mats Wilander defeated Ivan Lendl to win his first Australian Open title. He successfully defended his title in 1984 but lost to Stefan Edberg in 1985. Wilander made 10 appearances Down Under. The 7-time Grand Slam champion defeated Pat Cash to win the men’s singles title in 1988.

He defeated Arthur Ashe in 1971 and successfully defended his title by beating compatriot Mel Anderson. The only time, he lost was against Lew Hoad in the 1956 Australian Open finals.

However, he again won the title in 2003 which marked his fourth title in Australia and eighth title overall.

Moreover, Roger Federer became the second-oldest player to win an Australian Open title when he won it in 2018 which also marked his final major title win.

His success at Melbourne Park began in 2008 when he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Serb successfully won it consecutively from 2011-2013. He again clinched in 2015 and 2016 defeating Andy Murray both times. Making the Grand Slam more successful, Djokovic was consecutive winner three-times from 2019-2021. The last time, he won was against Daniil Medvedev.
