The four most significant yearly professional tennis competitions in the world are the Grand Slam events, commonly known as majors. The Australian Open (also known as AO) is the first Grand Slam of the year. It is played in the month of January every year at Melbourne Park in Australia. The first Australian Open tournament was played at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in St Kilda Road, Melbourne in 1905 (117 years ago) as The Australasian Championships. It became an Open professional competition in 1969.
The men’s and women’s singles events are the most-watched event at the Australian Open, one of the most challenging and prestigious wheelchair tennis tournaments in the world.
The Australian Open 2023 will be played from January 16th to January 29th, 2023. This is the 111th edition of the prestigious event. The competition was not held only during the two World Wars. Over the years it saw the crowning of many champions, both male, and female. Novak Djokovic is the most successful player here with 9 triumphs over the years. Margaret Court has won this tournament 11 times- 7 times in Amateur Era and 4 Open Era.
The Bryan Brothers– Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan have won the men’s doubles event 6 times. Martina Navratilova with Pam Shriver won the women’s doubles event 7 times together. Leander Paes has won the mixed doubles title 3 times, once each with Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, and Cara Black. Shingo Kunieda has won the men’s wheelchair event 11 times. Esther Vergeer has won the women’s wheelchair event 9 times. She has also won the women’s doubles wheelchair event 7 times. David Wagner has won the men’s doubles wheelchair event 9 times.

Martina Navratilova- 3 Australian Open titles
The Czech-born American is considered one of the most successful tennis players of all time. She won the women’s singles event in Australia 3 times- in 1981, 1983, and 1985. The 18-time Grand Slam champion defeated her old rival Chris Evert twice, in 1981 and 1983 to clinch the Australian Open title. She also played in the finals in 1975 against Evonne Goolagong Cawley; 1982 against Chris Evert and 1987 against Helen Gourlay. But could not win.
Monica Seles- 4 Australian Open titles
The former World No.1 has won the Australian Open trophy 4 times in her career. She shot to fame immediately after winning the French Open in 1990 at the age of 16 years. The American soon followed it up by winning the Australian Open in 1991. She went on to win the title in 1992, 1993, and 1996 stamping her authority at the major.
Steffi Graf- 4 Australian Open titles
The German scored a hat-trick of title triumphs at Melbourne between 1988 and 1990. She defeated Chris Evert in 1988, Helena Sukova in 1989, and Mary Joe Fernandez in 1990 in the finals to claim the titles. The Former World No.1 won her fourth Australian Open title in 1994 by defeating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. She also played in the final of the Australian Open in 1993 but lost to Monica Seles.
Evonne Goolagong Cawley- 4 Australian Open titles
She played in 7 final matches here between 1971 and 1977. The Australian lost the first three but won the last four between 1974 and 1977. She defeated some of the top players of her era such as Chris Evert in 1974; Martina Navratilova in 1975; Renata Tomanova in 1976, and Helen Gourlay in 1977 in order to win the Australian Open titles. For her achievements, she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Aboriginal Sporting Hall of Fame in 1989.

Martina Hingis- 5 Australian Open titles
The Swiss have won 5 Grand Slam titles in her career. She won her first Grand Slam title- the Australian Open, in 1997 at the age of 16 years. This triumph made her the youngest Grand Slam winner. She also won this competition in 1998 and 1999. She also reached the final here consecutively in 2000 and 2001 but lost to Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati, respectively.
Margaret Court- 7 in Amateur Era and 4 Australian Open titles in the Open Era
She is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. She won 11 Australian Open titles in total. This count includes 7 titles she won in the Amateur Era and 4 titles she won in the Open Era. She also made a hat trick with titles in 1969, 1970, and 1971, and another in 1973. Before this, she won seven back-to-back titles between 1960-1966.
Serena Williams- 7 Australian Open titles
The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a major impact on this Grand Slam event as well. She won here for the first time in 2003 and has since added six more Australian Open titles to her tally. The American won in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2017. She has played 8 final matches here and lost only once, in 2016 to Angelique Kerber, and is thus considered the most successful female tennis player in this major.
