“My dream was to be the best of my craft, and I’m very close to it”, Stefanos Tsitsipas shares excitement over the upcoming Australian Open

Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas was once considered an emerging next-gen talent. While there haven’t been any significant dips in his career, it hasn’t quite peaked either. Still lacking a major title, and chasing the no.1 ranking, Stefanos Tsitsipas has a lot to prove.

While he is yet to win a Grand Slam, the 24-year-old has been able to perform in a consistent manner, maintaining his position in the ATP Top 10. He turned pro as an 18-year-old in 2016. In 2019, he became the youngest winner of the ATP Finals in eighteen years. Stefanos Tsitsipas has a total of 9 singles titles to his name. His best Grand Slam performance was his runners-up finish in the 2021 Roland Garros.

Ahead of the upcoming Australian Open, where the Greek will, once again, be on the hunt for his maiden major title, an interview of him was shared by the Twitter handle of the tournament. It starts with Tsitsipas saying “People ask me if I am ready to win a Grand Slam? I won’t really know until it happens.”

He goes on to mention how much and why he looks forward to the first Slam of the year. “Australia kind of feels like home to me. Coming here, I feel very familiar with its environment. I feel very comfortable staying here with the Australian people. I feel like I’m one of them!” he explained.

When questioned about his most memorable match, the Greek fondly recalled his clash with Roger Federer in 2019. “Roger Federer, on Rod Laver [arena] in 2019. I felt like I was dreaming and I was about to wake up at any moment…but I didn’t! I couldn’t sleep that night – at all! I could hear the crowd in my head at 2 AM. It wouldn’t go away” he said.

Reflecting on his epic quarterfinal bout with Rafael Nadal in 2021, Tsitsipas said “I came back from two sets love down, and had to put an incredible amount of effort and concentration to make it happen. And it was truly an incredible comeback. I’ve never had such a comeback in my career.” Tsitsipas won the match 3-6 2-6 7-6 6-4 7-5.

Stefanos Tsitsipas believes that he is heading in the right direction toward achieving his dreams. “My dream was to be the best of my craft, and I’m very close to it. I’m heading towards the right direction”, he said with conviction.
