“Nadal is a cheat!” Novak Djokovic fans label Rafael Nadal ‘fake’ for faking an injury to win at Wimbledon, remembers Serbian’s Australian Open 2021 abdominal tear

Rafael Nadal

22-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal came back from the dead and overcame his abdominal injury to defeat Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon 2022 in five sets 3-6,7-5,3-6,7-5,7-6(10-4). In the process, he reached his 38th grand slam semifinal and a third consecutive Wimbledon semifinal.

What made Nadal’s victory sweeter is that he won the match despite not being at his 100%. Nadal felt discomfort in his abdomen in the second set and even took a medical timeout to get treatment. He had to change his serve a bit to feel less pain. He was even considering retiring from the match but he somehow hung on and crossed the finish line.

While the majority of the sporting world, fans, and stakeholders hailed Rafael Nadal for showing unbelievable grit, some of the fans, especially the admirers of Novak Djokovic, criticized Nadal and called him a cheat for allegedly ‘faking’ an injury. It is however confirmed that Nadal was injured and has a minor abdominal tear.

Nadal clearly struggled with movement and his serve speed was also drastically reduced. At times he clocked just about 90 mph but mixed it up with precise angles which helped his cause.

Some people questioned how can someone who is as injured as Nadal plays at this high level against an opponent who himself is riding on a winning streak on grass and was having a dream run at Wimbledon.
