“Need a glass of wine” Nick Kyrgios reveals his evening plans after a nail-biting victory to enter his second Wimbledon quarterfinal
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in an absolute slugfest to enter the fourth round of Wimbledon 2022 and he would have hoped for an easy match against American new entrant Brandon Nakashima. But, Nakashima brought a whole package to trouble Kyrgios and pull the Aussie into a five-set showdown. Kyrgios came out serving rockets and Nakashima matched his every serve.
But, Kyrgios finally prevailed in a brutal encounter as he won the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 6-2 to take down Nakashima and enter the quarterfinal at Wimbledon for only the second time in his career. With this win, Kyrgios keeps his 100% record of winning the five-setters at Wimbledon intact. He is now 6-0 in five-set matches at Wimbledon and two of those six were this year.

Apart from a stellar performance from Nakashima, it seems like Kyrgios had the added pressure of playing through a sore shoulder, which he kept massaging throughout the match. After he lost the fourth set 6-3, it looked like Nakashima had finally been able to break him down, but Kyrgios played his absolute best in the fifth set to win the match. The mental and physical toll this match would have taken on Kyrgios can only be explained by his post-match interview.
First, he congratulated his young opponent. He said, “Hell of an effort by Brandon, he’s a hell of a player, 20 years old, he’s gonna do some special things.” Talking about his plans to cool down after the match, he said, “I need a glass of wine for sure tonight!”
This win sets up Kyrgios’s quarterfinal encounter with Cristian Garin who took out Alex de Minaur, facing a couple of match points. This has been the easiest path Nick Kyrgios could have hoped for to the semifinal and he would not like to let such an opportunity slip by. Nick’s current performance bolsters his stature among the dark horses to win the Wimbledon 2022.
