Nick Kyrgios has developed a reputation for being a ‘bad boy’ on the ATP Tour. The Australian never hesitates to put forth his opinion and has gotten himself involved in plenty of controversies in the past couple of years. Recently, Nick Kyrgios opened up on struggles with racism in Australia.
In a recent interview, the tennis player revealed that he has had to deal with a lot of racism in his home country. As a matter of fact, Kyrgios’ father was born in Greece, whereas, his mother is from Malaysia. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up described Australia as one of the most racist countries in the world.
Nick Kyrgios revealed that although he has learnt to deal with the situation in a much better manner, the issue still persists. “I have. I have dealt with bad racism. Australia is a pretty racist country in general, one of the most racist countries in the world,” Kyrgios when asked about his struggles with racism. “Yeah, I think it is. I have grown some thick skin in sport and in life, so I deal with it better than I did. But it’s never easy,” he continued.
Nick Kyrgios reveals some big names in Australia have been guilty of racism
Nick Kyrgios revealed that some of the biggest names in Australia have racially abused him, suggesting he go back to his ancestral roots. The Australian tennis star asserted that such comments should not be acceptable in any scenario.
“Some of the most iconic people in sport in Australia have told me and my family to go back where we came from and this kind of bullshit. Stuff that isn’t acceptable, not acceptable at all,” he added.
Nick Kyrgios has been out on the sidelines for an extended period of time. Having played just one match this season, the 28-year-old enters Wimbledon low on preparation. The Australian ended as the runner-up last time around, as he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the finals in four sets.
Kyrgios opens his campaign against David Goffin in the first round on Monday. The 28-year-old has a pretty decent record at the Championships over the years, as his first big career break came at the same tournament almost a decade ago. He rose to prominence when he defeated Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon in 2014.
