Australian World No.26 Nick Kyrgios didn’t confine his happiness over his best friend and doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis‘ win over the Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka. In an instant classic in the second round of the French Open, Kokkinakis took 4 hours and 41 minutes to take down the ‘Stanimal’ : 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 6-3. Kyrgios tweeted that he expected his friend to win the thriller during the match and was excited to see the result as he wished.

As Kyrgios tweeted, “Thanks my bro I woke up in a good mood….. pretty cheeky match to win“. The term “cheeky” is totally understandable as he mentions the relationship between Kokkinakis and Wawrinka, ruined by Kyrgios’ indecent comment years back. For the uninitiated, Kyrgios said then that Kokkinakis had slept with Wawrinka’s girlfriend.

Kokkinakis has never been vocal about Wawrinka or the accused relationship but still, the hype had been so much for the second-round encounter between these two in the Parisian dirt. The Australian will now face Russian World No.11 Karen Khachanov in the third round. Tennis Twitter was making a lot of noise around Kyrgios’ tweets and was digging a lot into the Swiss Veteran’s downfall.

There were people who openly mentioned this victory of Kokkinakis as “The first win after the b’*ng“, while some others ask Kyrgios to stop digging on that – “Let it go, Nick,” they wrote.

The Australian wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis made it past the first round of the French Open for the first time in 8 years. His first-round. win this year against Dan Evans is his first in Roland Garros since 2015. He has now moved to the third round after the five-set thriller against the former champion Stan Wawrinka. But unlike his friend Nick Kyrgios, Kokkinakis had all praise for the Swiss legend after the emphatic win.

After the win, Kokkinakis said, “I knew Stan’s getting older, but the 1st set & a half, I thought he was playing the best tennis he could play. I just tried to hang in there… He never went away. It seemed like whenever he was down he was playing better tennis.”

He also tweeted calling Stan a legend, “WOW….. What a war, couldn’t be happier.. big respect to @stanwawrinka. unreal fight #legend“. It seems like Kokkinakis doesn’t want to dig deeper into the past as he has reflected on his career as well in a totally sweet way.

As Kokkinakis told, “I’ve had a pretty crazy story. I came into the scene pretty young. I was looking like I was gonna have a big future. Then I sort of went missing for the last 5 years. 3rd round on clay, who would’ve thought for an Australian.”
