World No. 19, Nick Kyrgios has not started his 2023 yet. The Australian was supposed to take part in his home Grand Slam tournament, but a severe knee surgery forced him to abruptly pull out of the tournament. After an MRI scan discovered a cyst in his knee, Kyrgios had to undergo surgery to repair the joint.
Earlier, the player had declared that he would return to compete in the Sunshine Double. Later, he posted a cryptic message regarding the same. However, due to the unsuccessful recovery from the surgery, the tennis star will not start his season any time soon. Kyrgios has announced that he is pulling out of the Indian Wells ATP 500.
The Australian has been dealing with a knee ailment for several months, missing the United Cup, and the Australian Open. Nick had an arthroscopic operation done to his lateral meniscus to clean it up and remove a para-labral cyst. Afterward, Daniel Horsfall, Kyrgios’ manager, stated that the 27-year-old planned to make a comeback at Indian Wells. Will Maher, Kyrgios’ physical therapist had also expressed enthusiasm.
Kyrgios had a fantastic year in 2022, competing in his first Major final at Wimbledon and winning 37 of his 47 matches. The Australian hoped for better success in 2023 once he returned to competition after finishing the year just outside the top 20. Unfortunately, Kyrgios’ luck had seemed to run its course.
Missing out on the Sunshine Double could heavily impact Kyrgios’ rankings. Both tournaments will cost him 270 points. Nevertheless, the Aussie seems confident that he will be back in shape again. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Masters last year and he was eliminated by Jannik Sinner in the round of 16 of the Miami Open.

Nick Kyrgios reflects back on his past alcoholic tendencies

Kyrgios has recently revealed the hard times he faced during his early years in the sport. He explained how he used to drink ‘six to seven times’ a day. Furthermore, unlike other players, pre-match rituals involved alcohol for the Australian. Kyrgios said that he even won a tournament while he was going through his period.
He also stated that he distanced himself from his close ones and faced a lot of pressure. “I drank every day. I remember that four years ago I drank five or six times a week and I was playing anyway at the highest levels…woke up after drinking aware that I would have to face Nadal in a few hours. It is not sustainable. I won a tournament during this period.” said Nick.
