Nick Kyrgios

It was a disappointing couple of days in New York for World No. 25 Nick Kyrgios who bowed out of the 2022 US Open first in Doubles and then from singles on back-to-back days. Partnering Thanasi Kokkinakis, the Australians lost to the pair of Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara in 3-sets.

Kyrgios then lost to Karen Khachanov in the quarter-final of the singles discipline suffering a 5-set defeat in a Grand Slam match for the first time in his career. After the runner-up finish in Wimbledon, Nick was looking to go a step further in the Flushing Meadows but it was not meant to be, atleast this year.

Upset with himself for losing in the quarter-finals, Kyrgios vented his frustration out on his rackets after the match smashing two in a row while Khachanov was on the court thanking the fans for the reception during the 3.5-hour-long match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After initially smashing the racket with which he played the match, the Australian then picked another racket from his bench and smacked it as well showing his anger and disappointment in his performance for missing a good chance as he had defeated defending champion and World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the 4th round.

Nick had also thrown a bottle on the ground earlier in the match and for all his unsportsmanlike conduct including swearing during the match, he has been fined $14,000 which takes his tournament total to $32,500 with big fines being paid for spitting and swearing earlier as well.

The fine will however be a small dent for the Australian who takes a massive cheque back home given his run to the quarters in singles and the Round of 16 in Doubles. Nick won a total of $473,200 in prize money at Flushing Meadows this year, $445,000 for singles and $28,200 for doubles.
