Former World No. 1 Simona Halep’s four-year ban from tennis following her violation of the anti-doping program has taken the tennis world by shock. Traces of Roxadustat, a prohibited substance, were found in the Romanian international’s blood sample ahead of the 2022 US Open campaign, which led to a provisional ban being imposed on her. After a long delay in her trials, it finally took place recently and the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has imposed a four-year ban on her.
Meanwhile, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has made a controversial statement on Simona Halep’s situation through his Twitter account. Maria Sakkari recently came out in support of the former World No. 1. She said that it is becoming increasingly difficult to trust the doping authorities, seeing how they have treated the Simona Halep situation, as it now seems like even taking electrolytes will lead to players getting banned. On a tweet that had her quotes, Nick Kyrgios commented, “Ehhhh not really lol, I run on bananas and coke cola in 5 set battles. And my record in them speaks for itself. Maybe players should just stop taking shady sh*t. Look yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and say yep I did it right. Not hard”.
Kyrgios was highly criticized for his take on the situation. Many even questioned his credibility in making a comment like this. One particular user pointed out that Nick does not have a great record to begin with. He neither has a Grand Slam, a 1000, nor an Olympic medal. He has not even participated in an ATP Final.
To that, the Australian replied, “I’d imagine if I was taking similar things to be banned for 4 years I’d have about 5 slams. Potato.” This is not the first time that Nick Kyrgios has been criticized for his uncensored and rude comments on X (Twitter).
Simona Halep expected to challenge ITIA’s decision soon
The four-year ban signifies that Simona Halep will not be able to play in any tennis tournament until October 2026 if the verdict remains unchallenged. This means that Halep will be 35 years old by the time the ban is lifted. Thus, the ban will practically end her career if it stays.
Simona Halep is expected to challenge the ITIA’s decision in court soon as, according to her, she underwent regular testing in the early part of 2023 and tested negative every time. She revealed that her diet was changed ahead of the 2022 hard court season based on recommendations from her trusted team. None of the supplements she used had any prohibited substances except for one that was tainted by Roxadustat.
