Daniil Medvedev, world number one, made a great start to his hard-court swing to win his first title of the year among the four final appearances of the year, defeating the defending champion Cameron Norrie in the finals of the Los Cabos Open in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 23 minutes of play. The Russian did not drop a single set all week at the Mexican ATP 250 event to earn his 14th ATP title and recorded his 250th career win becoming just the second man born after 1994 to reach that milestone.. He won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open 2021 defeating Novak Djokovic in the finals.
Medvedev could not participate at the Wimbledon Championship 2022 due to the ban on Russian and Belarus players owing to the Russia-Ukraine war. He was the finalist at the Australian Open but lost to the ultimate champion Rafael Nadal, who clinched his 21st Grand Slam singles title. In the era where Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer, the Russian has managed to make a place for himself with his fair share of success despite being relatively young.

Recently in an interview, Medvedev revealed that he could not help anything but just follow the rules despite the fact that he was banned from participating in the All England Club. He said “You have to appreciate it because I definitely couldn’t change the decision of Wimbledon. I have to follow the rules. If you focus on the negative part. For sure I wanted to play at Wimbledon, I wanted to do well there. I always want to be in the biggest tournaments and try to play well. You can just stay in this circle of, ‘oh, my God, I was not able to be there“.
Rather he took it in a positive way and utilized his time getting fully prepared and ready for the upcoming challenges. He also added the fact that normally he plays during that time and does not get sufficient time to prepare for the hard-court season but he does not regret the lost time. He added “I’ve made a very good preparation block for the US Open Series, which normally you cannot do because you play Wimbledon. I was able to do it. Feeling 100 percent physically, and mentally ready. Really happy with Los Cabos for sure with the title.“
He also revealed the fact that it does not bother him if the Russians are allowed to play under a neutral flag. The thing that matters to him is that he is allowed to play. He further added “The rule at one point was very clear that we have to play under a neutral flag. Me, I’m still Daniil Medvedev. I still want to win big titles, win big matches or small matches. It doesn’t change. What matters is playing tennis. I really enjoy my job. Yeah, again, it’s about following the rules.“
Medvedev will next play at the National Bank Open in Toronto ahead of the US Open 2022 where he will be looking to defend his title. His latest win at the Los Cabos has added another element to his preparations.
