Novak Djokovic led Serbia was eliminated from the semis of the Davis Cup on Saturday. Serbia lost to Italy and their dreams of a second Davis Cup after 2010 have been shattered. Serbia started the match full guns blazing with Miomir Kecmanovic acquiring a win over Lorenzo Musetti. However, come the second round and it was a rematch of the ATP Finals last week.

Unfortunately, the results were not on Nole’s side this time as Jannik Sinner beat the Serb first in the singles match by 6-2,2-6,7-5 victory, and then in the decisive doubles match. Sinner teamed up with Lorenzo Sonego to defeat Djokovic and Kecmanovic 6-3,6-4 in the doubles match. During the press conference after the match, Djokovic expressed his disappointment for the loss taking responsibility for it having missed three match points.

"For me, it's a huge disappointment, because I take responsibility for it, obviously, after having three match points, and having been so close to victory. It's really unfortunate. It's sports. When you lose for your country, the feeling of bitterness is even greater. Congratulations to Italy. They deserved it.
said Djokovic in the press conference.

Sinner showed an exemplary set of skills and resilience to guide past the Serbian. It was huge pressure on the 22-year-old as the first round was won by Serbia and a defeat would have ensured that Italy was out of the Davis Cup. But the doubles tie was the decider and Italy sailed through.

Sinner’s performances gained huge appreciation from Novak Djokovic

Nole has always been in high praises for Sinner. Even after his victory at the ATP Finals, the Serbian appreciated the performance of the 22-year-old. Nole even went up to the extent of saying that he himself would be surprised if the Italian doesn’t win numerous Grand Slams across his career. There’s no shying away from the fact that the world No.4 is currently one of the best young players around and Djokovic shared similar thoughts.

They played very well, especially Jannik.. in singles against me & in doubles as well. He barely missed anything the entire game… You just have to say bravo when someone plays like that. I know he has one of the fastest forehands in the game and he puts a lot of spin and power into it. I wasn't too surprised by this. I know Jannik's qualities, but I thought he might drop his level a little in doubles, and that wasn't the case. He maintained an extremely high level.
added Djokovic praising the Italian.

Italy would be facing Australia, 28 times winner of the event in the finals on Sunday. All eyes would be on Sinner after such an exemplary performance against the 24 major Grand Slam winner.

Italy is playing a final of the Davis Cup for the first time since 1998 and had last won the Davis Cup way back in 1978. Italy would be counting upon Sinner to end their long wait for a Davis Cup title.
