World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has looked like a man on a mission for the last couple of months. He has been going in at different tournaments with a target in his head and wouldn’t lie down until and unless he gets it down. After achieving the record for holding the most number of ATP Finals titles last week, he is now adamant to bag the second Davis Cup for his country.
On Thursday, his nation Serbia was up against one of the major favorites, Great Britain, for a place in the semis. While many didn’t expect Serbia to make it out of the quarter-finals, it was the brilliance of Nole along with Miomir Kecmanovic that got the job done on the night. After his match against Cameron Norrie, when Djokovic was all lined up to give an on-court interview, the British fans in the stands played their drums trying to shower hate over the Serbian.
While Nole resisted and restrained himself from the situation as much as possible, his will finally gave up as he slammed the fans heavily. Djokovic went straight out at them, asking them to keep quiet and respect players. Djokovic said,
Learn how to respect players, learn how to respect people, you shut up, you be quiet.
Djokovic ensured that there was little drama on the court with a dominating performance. However, things got a bit spicy when some of the British fans booed Djokovic and tried to heckle him prior to his post-match interview. The World No. 1 was seen blowing kisses to the booing audience.
Throwback to the last time when Novak Djokovic won the Davis Cup
Way back in the year 2010, Serbia became the 13th tennis-playing nation to get their name on the Davis Cup. On the way to their glory, Novak Djokovic was pivotal in carrying them to the silverware.
In the World Group first-round stage, Serbia was set to play the United States for a place in the quarter-finals. To everyone’s surprise, Serbia emerged victorious as Djokovic went on to bag two crucial points beating Sam Querrey and John Isner in the singles matchup.
While Serbia beat the United States 3-2, they were next in line to play Croatia. Djokovic and his crew got the job done pretty easily by a scoreline of 4-1. Yet again Nole picked up two crucial points from both his singles encounters over Ivan Ljubicic and Marin Cilic. In the semis, they beat the Czech Republic by 3-2 with Djokovic getting the all-important win over Tomas Berdych in the fourth game to keep Serbia in the tie.
In the finals, Serbia came into the match as clear underdogs against the mighty French team who came into the match with a convincing 5-0 win over Argentina in the semis. But yet again, Djokovic stood as a leader for his side bagging two crucial wins, Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils, to help Serbia beat France by 3-2.
