World No.1 Novak Djokovic was defeated by Jannik Sinner in the semi-final of the 2024 Australian Open on Friday. It is the first time that the Serb has tasted defeat in the semi-final of the Australian Slam’s history.

Sinner has turned himself to be a constant thorn in the Serb’s side. Since the Wimbledon final in July 2023, Djokovic has lost a total of four matches. Of these four, three were against the Italian. Such is the prowess of the young Italian, who is slowly, but surely, making his mark on the tennis court.

Ever since his debut at the Australian Open, nearly two decades ago, the Serb has been defeated by a total of eight people, including the Italian. Sinner now joins an elite list consisting of Marat Safin, Paul Goldstein, Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Stan Wawrinka, Denis Isotomin, and Chung Hyeon, all of who, are the only players to have defeated Djokovic at the Australian Major.

With this, Jannik Sinner has successfully made his mark in the tennis community, as the young talent was able to script his name alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Notably, he has now become the player who has thrashed the tennis great himself at the Grand Slam, Davis Cup, and ATP Finals levels.

Regardless of the upset against Sinner, he is still the top-ranked player in the world. The Serb is one of the most feared players on the court and only a few have conquered him. Before the defeat against Sinner, Nole boasted a 20-0 record in the semis of his favorite Slam.

That’s not all. Along with a devastating loss, this was also the only second match in Djokovic’s professional career at a Grand Slam with zero breakpoint chances.

Jannik Sinner to make Grand Slam final debut

The 22-year-old Italian is set to make an appearance at a Grand Slam final for the first time in his career. After a stellar performance against the 10-time Australian Open champion, defeating the Serb in four sets, Sinner will now wait for his opponent to be named at the final.

The Italian defeated Djokovic in the semi-final, with a score of 1-6, 2-6, 7-6, 3-6. This was quite an upset for the Serb, who has seen very little loss in Australia. Sinner was very comfortable against his opponent, as Djokovic was struggling ever since the first set.

The World No.4 player will wait for the result of the semi-final match between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev to find out who his opponent is. The Italian seems to be in excellent form as he is expected to put up an incredibly tough fight in the final, regardless of the result.
