The ATP has announced that no ranking points will be awarded for Wimbledon 2022. This is in response to Wimbledon’s ruling of banning Russian and Belarussian athletes from the 2022 Championships. The AELTC banned Russian players from competing in Wimbledon 2022 due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Many contemporary players, including big names like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, have condemned Wimbledon’s ruling and called for better verdicts. The ATP has responded this time and have taken a very firm stand. They are clear with their thought that Wimbledon’s ruling is uncalled for and unfair and hence have stripped of the ranking points in order to take a stand.
As a result, no points will be awarded at the Championships. Naturally, a player winning Wimbledon gets 2000 points while the runner-up gets 1200 points. To continue, as part of the 52-week cycle, the points from Wimbledon 2021 will be dropped but the only difference is that players won’t be able to defend their points from last year’s edition. This means that no point from Wimbledon will remain in players’ ranking points after Wimbledon 2022.
“Points earned at Wimbledon in 2021 will drop from players’ rankings as per ATP rules (52 weeks after the previous year’s event). As such, no points from Wimbledon will remain in a player’s ranking breakdown after this year’s event,” the ATP said.

Blessing in disguise for Daniil Medvedev?
As a result, defending champion Novak Djokovic will suffer the most and will drop a mammoth 2000 points while defending finalist Matteo Berrettini will lose 1200 points. Daniil Medvedev, who is the current World No.2, will drop only 180 points as he was knocked out in the fourth round. Semifinalists Denis Shapovalov and Hubert Hurkacz will drop 720 points each while all quarterfinalists will drop 360 points.
As of today’s ranking, the ranking after Wimbledon points drop from last year will look like these:
- Daniil Medvedev – 7800 points
- Alexander Zverev – 6895 points
- Novak Djokovic – 6660 points
- Stefanos Tsitsipas – 5965 points
- Rafael Nadal – 5525 points
Ironically, the ATP stripped of ranking points to take a stand against discrimination happening to players like Daniil Medvedev but after this decision, Medvedev will be the beneficiary who will become World No.1 without stepping on the tour.
