Novak Djokovic has said that his recovery from injury has gone very well, and he’s feeling the best he’s don’t so far at the 2023 Australian Open. The Serbian thanked his team for helping him recover after he thrashed Alex de Minaur in the tournament’s fourth round.
Djokovic was relieved as he announced at the post-match press conference that he had had his best day on the court since picking up the hamstring strain during the Adelaide International 1. He explained the process behind the recovery too. “We take it day by day. We do a lot of things actually. It’s been exhausting to be involved in a lot of different treatments and machines and stuff that we do,” Djokovic said.
He was satisfied with the progress and thanked his team for their work. “At the same time it was necessary in order to get myself in a condition to play. So I’m really glad my body has responded really well. Tonight I didn’t feel any pain. I moved as well as I have the whole tournament. It means we’re progressing in the right direction,” Djokovic revealed. Immediately after the match Djokovic had said, “Obviously I was dealing with an injury, I don’t feel anything today. I think my medical team, my physio, I thank God. I don’t take anything for granted, so let’s keep it going.”
The Serbian now enters the quarterfinals looking more dangerous than ever. He was dominant in his match against Minaur, as he conceded just five games. He finished with 49% of Minaur’s service points to his name.
Djokovic’s record in Melbourne and backing by the city’s crowd will make things difficult for his opponents. The World No.5 faces Andrey Rublev in the next round of the 2023 Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic to face Andrey Rublev in quarterfinals
Djokovic will face his biggest challenge in Melbourne in the quarterfinals. His match against fifth seed Rublev will be the one to watch as two of the highest-ranked players left face off against each other.
Rublev and Djokovic have played each other three times before. But none of these have been at Grand Slam tournaments. Djokovic holds the edge with a 2-1 win record. But Rublev has the most significant victory. The Russian beat Djokovic in his home country in the final of the Belgrade Open. The 6-2,7-6(4),6-0 win was reasonably comfortable for Rublev.
Djokovic was able to beat him at the Nitto ATP Finals in both 2021 and 2022 though. The high stakes of a Grand Slam tournament quarterfinals will be a very different stage. The record will not matter much under the lights of Melbourne Park.
