Novak Djokovic and Matija Pecotic
“Part-time tennis player” Matija Pecotic got the right encouragement from the world’s best player to continue playing. The Serbian 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic took to Instagram and posted a story of the Croatian’s video uploaded by Tennis TV. He called Matija “my brother” and asked him to focus on tennis and hoped to meet him on the court soon.
As Djokovic quoted (translated via google), “Matija my brother. You are not fit for office yet. See you on the court soon.” The story by the Serbian is already making enough rounds on the internet. The same was screen captured and shared all across social media by tennis fans highlighting Djokovic’s nature of being there for lower-ranked or upcoming tennis players.
Matija’s dream run in the ATP-250 Del Ray Open ended in the pre-quarterfinals against Marcos Giron 3-6, 3-6. He is the Director of Capital Markets for a real estate investment company and enrolled at Delray Beach Open as an alternate. Not only was he selected, but he also reached the main draw of the ATP Tour for the first time.

The 33-year-old Matija Pecotic‘s entry into the top of the tennis world is nothing short of a dramatic movie. The Croatian works at a real estate office called Wexford Capital. His full-time job is there from 9 AM to 6 PM every weekday. He said that he will try to squeeze in some tennis on the weekends and in the mornings.
He started his career at 24 and soon he went up to become the 206th-ranked player in the world in less than two years. But then he had a serious stomach injury that changed the trajectory of a promising career.
After coming back to the tour, he was playing his best tennis. He went up to rank 320 in less than 6 months. But then COVID hit and the tour got canceled. He continued to keep playing at times after the regular office work. Now at 33 years of age, he won the first ATP tour match. The win was against former Top-10 ranked American Jack Sock in the first round of the ATP-250 Delray Open.
