Novak Djokovic confirmed to be featured in Boris Becker’s upcoming documentary that looks into the German’s troubled life
Novak Djokovic to feature in "Boris Becker vs World" documentary.
Novak Djokovic and Boris Becker
Serbian World No.1 Novak Djokovic is confirmed to be featured in the Apple TV series about German tennis legend Boris Becker‘s personal life. The documentary will be dropping its first episode on April 7th. The series is confirmed to be released in two parts. For the uninitiated, Boris Becker was behind the bars for some months due to tax evasion-related charges in England.
The documentary is expected to showcase the personal life of the German from different points of view, as stated, “Every aspect of the man who became a tennis sensation after winning The Wimbledon Championships at the age of just 17, going on to win 49 career titles, including six Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal, as well as his high-profile, sometimes tumultuous personal life.”
The much-awaited documentary already had a preview in Berlin last month where the German legend addressed his wrongdoings. The curious case of his tax evasion charges and how a legend of his stature who won Wimbledon at just 17 years of age, got a complete turnaround in his life is expected to be watched by a lot of tennis fans around the globe.
He said in Berlin last month, “I’m the last person to complain about my life. I’m 55 years old and I’m very proud of the things that I’ve done. But I’ve made mistakes, It is very difficult to win Wimbledon at age 17. You have to be a bit crazy. Borderline. Crossing the line.“
“Doing things that nobody has done before in order to achieve something nobody has achieved before. To have that mindset and live a normal lifestyle is almost impossible. And when the going gets tough I usually get better, I’m not afraid of a tie break, I’m not afraid of a final. But in real life that is a problem sometimes.” (Source: Express UK)
Boris Becker’s legendary tennis career
The youngest Wimbledon champion ever, Boris Becker is one of the most formidable names in the history of tennis. He won his first Grand Slam at the tender age of 17 years on the grass courts of Wimbledon. Becker held the record at that time for the youngest-ever male tennis player. This was later broken in the 1989 French Open by Michael Chang.
Becker winning the 1985 Wimbledon was almost like a fairy tale. He started the tournament as an unseeded player and nobody expected the ‘German kid’ to win it all. He defeated US open 8th seeded Kevin Curran in finals in 4 sets (6–3, 6–7(4-7), 7–6 (7-3), 6–4). Curran was in exceptional form coming to the finals after defeating all-time greats Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, and Jimmy Connors in the previous rounds in straight sets. The final was also expected to be a one-sided affair for the American but the 17-year-old kid had some other plans.
Becker has won 6 Grand Slam titles and 49 ATP singles titles throughout his career. He was quite successful on the grass surface as he won three Wimbledon titles in 1985, 1986, and 1989. He also won the 1995 Hopman Cup with Anke Huber. Other important titles are the 1992 Barcelona Olympics gold medal in the doubles event and Davis Cup twice in 1988 and 1989 for his country, Germany.
