Novak Djokovic has accomplished yet another accolade in his already successful season as he finishes 2023 with the highest gain of ATP ranking points. The Serb became the year-end World No. 1 after some serious competition against Carlos Alcaraz.
Jannik Sinner, who played phenomenally in the latter half of the tournament, was second on the list of highest gain of ranking points this season. The Italian won the China Open and the Vienna Open at the end of the season and also reached the final of the 2023 ATP Finals, where he lost to Djokovic.
The insane gain in ranking points that the Serb achieved this season was courtesy of his low finish in 2022. Djokovic was not allowed to take part in a lot of tournaments last year due to his strong stand against the COVID-19 vaccine and his unvaccinated status. He was not allowed to enter Australia or the United States of America to take part in the Australian Open and the US Open, respectively.
He missed the Australian Open, the BNP Paribas Open, the Miami Open, and the US Open in 2022. As a result, it took a significant hit on his rankings and he finished 5th at the end of the season. Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest year-end World No. 1 and also broke the record for the biggest rise ever in rankings, from No. 32 to No. 1. Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas all ranked above the Serbs last season.
This year too, he had to miss two tournaments because of his unvaccinated status, namely the Miami Open and the Indian Wells. However, the 36-year-old performed so well this year that his absence from the two Masters tournaments did not matter in the end. He gained 6425 points this season and became the year-end World No. 1.
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev make significant gain of ranking points alongside Novak Djokovic
Apart from Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev also made significant improvements in their rankings and amassed a lot of ranking points. Sinner, who finished as World No. 15 at the end of 2022, finished fourth in 2023. He became the first ever Italian to get into the Top-4 ATP rankings and the youngster will only improve from here.
In the ATP Finals 2023 group stage, he defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time ever. Unfortunately, he was unable to repeat that in the final. The Italian beat the Serb again in the Davis Cup to improve his record against him.
Daniil Medvedev, on the other hand, finished the 2022 season as World No. 7 and he has now finished the 2023 season as World No. 3. He gained 3535 points in 2023 (third highest). He won the Rome Masters and Miami Open this season and made it to the finals of the Indian Wells, US Open, China Open, and Vienna Open.
