Former World No.1, Mats Wilander believes that defending Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is well on course to surpass the title record of both Roger Federer and Martina Navratilova, as he has “four or five years left in him as one of the favorites.”

With the action kicking off at the 136th edition of the oldest tennis tournament in the world, Novak Djokovic has a slew of records in sight. If the Serb lifts his eighth Wimbledon trophy on July 16th, he will not only equal his great rival Roger Federer’s all-time Wimbledon tally but also match Federer’s and Bjorn Borg’s feat of winning 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles.

Former tennis pro turned pundit, Mats Wilander foresees the Serb continue to dominate the lawns of SW19 for at least four or five years more. Wilander, who serves as a tennis expert for Eurosport feels that Djokovic could easily get to 9 or 10 Wimbledon titles putting him in an exalted space that no man has ever achieved in close to 150 years of tennis.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Djokovic ends up with nine or 10. So Roger better hold this record of eight close to his heart for now. If it’s not this year then it’s next year, and if it’s not next year then it’s the year after. I think Novak has another four or five years left in him here as one of the favorites at Wimbledon,” said the 58-year old who is only one of 6 men in the Open Era to win Major singles titles on grass courts, hard courts, and clay courts.

The 2023 edition of the Championships marks the first Wimbledon contest since perennial crowd favorite Roger Federer’s retirement. The great man who was seated in the Royal Box today received a rousing reception upon his return to Centre Court.

While lauding Federer’s incredible achievements, Wilander believes that it’s only a matter of time before Djokovic surpasses his tally. The second-seed Novak Djokovic kicked off his Wimbledon 2023 campaign on a strong note, registering a comfortable straight-sets win over Argentine Pedro Cachin. The Serb will next take on Australian Jordan Thompson in the second round as he continues in his quest to scale newer peaks.
