The mouth-watering encounter every tennis fan was waiting for was played out today at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Park, Australia. The 2022 Wimbledon finalists Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios took on each other in a friendly. However, it did not look like one. The stadium was fully filled with loud and cheering spectators. These are some positive signs before the start of the Australian Open 2023.

This is the first time the two have met each other on the court after their Wimbledon clash. This is also the first match the Serb is playing at Melbourne Park after being deported from Australia last year. He got loud applause and a warm welcome from tennis fans as he entered the stadium.

The host James Bracey, took the interview of both the players before the start of the match. He asked the nine-time Australian Open champion some questions before inquiring him about his hamstring. Novak Djokovic answered the rest of the questions courteously, but gave a hilarious answer for this one. Australian sports broadcaster Wide World of Sports shared an excerpt of the interview on social media.

Yeah, I am feeling good… I am feeling good. This is the match that I care about only right now…Nick…Nick is in my thoughts…He is in my prayers…,” he said.

When Mr. Bracey asked him a specific question about Nick Kyrgios being in your head and that the Australian has told everyone that he has got a 2 to 1 advantage against him, the ‘Serbinator’ gave another answer which led to loud outbursts of laughter from the audience.

It is going to be 2-all after tonight,” he added further.

This is the first time practice matches ahead of the Australian Open has got so much traction. Hence, it was dubbed as a ‘friendly exhibition match’.

Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic are the two most popular tennis players in the world. Both players have a huge fan following. The Serb is a nine-time Australian Open men’s singles title winner, while the Australian won his maiden Australian Open doubles title with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis last year.

However, the two have met each other on the court before thrice, and surprisingly, Nick Kyrgios has defeated Novak Djokovic twice. The current World No.22 beat current World No.5 previously in the Quarter-final round match of 2017 Acapulco Open and Round of 16 match of 2017 Indian Wells Open.

However, the Serb beat the Australian in the most important and memorable encounter between the two, i.e., the 2022 Wimbledon final. This year, every tennis fan is hoping for some more exciting and hard-fought encounters between the two.
