The saga of the Ukraine-Russia war does not seem to end at all. It has been more than 8 months since Russia invaded Ukraine and peace has not stepped on the doorstep of Eastern Europe.
Meanwhile, geopolitics has also gotten involved in sports. Former Ukraine tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky (who is now on the battlefield with the Ukraine Army fighting Russian forces) and Serbia’s Davis Cup captain Victor Troicki had a war of words.
Another Former Ukrainian tennis player Alex Dolgopolov shared an excerpt of the conversation between Stakhovsky and Troicki in a social media post.
“Not that it’s a surprise that Serbia supports Russia and it’s war crimes,” his caption read.
Besides Victor Troicki, Janko Tipsarevic will also be playing in Russia. However, Novak Djokovic is not participating in the exhibition event in Russia.
Social media criticizes the Ukraine players for their opinions

When the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club decided to ban Russian and Belarusian players to participate in Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic criticized the organizers for such a decision in April.
“cannot support the decision of Wimbledon. I think it’s crazy. When politics interferes with sport, the result is not good,” he had said talking to the press.
“always condemn war, I will never support war, being myself a child of war … I know how much emotional trauma it leaves. In Serbia, we all know what happened in 1999. In the Balkans, we have had many wars in recent history,” he also added. However, he did participate in Wimbledon and won the tournament for the seventh time in his career. He is not playing in the exhibition event in Russia.
The 21-time Grand Slam champion’s countrymen Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki, however, accepted to participate in an exhibition event in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Ukrainian players are disappointed. They made their opinions clear on social media.
Social media users though, do not agree with Sergiy Stakhovsky’s and Alex Dolgopolov’s views. They reminded them of the generosity of Novak Djokovic when he offered help to Ukraine players and people. Here are a few reactions coming in on the above post.
Novak Djokovic wants, like us all, immediate cessation of hostilities and peace to return in the World. Meanwhile, he will be participating in the exhibition event World Tennis League in Dubai, UAE.
