After a slight delay, ATP has finally processed the bonus prize pool on its website and the prize money standings for the 2023 tour are finally out. One of the most shocking revelations in it is the fact that Novak Djokovic’s 2023 ATP bonus has been reduced by 100% as he missed more than three Masters 1000 tournaments.
The Serb has lost over $4 million in bonuses for this and tennis fans have been furious at the ATP for their decision. While not playing in the Asian swing was Djokovic’s own decision, as he wanted to give himself some time to recover after winning the 2023 US Open, missing Indian Wells and Miami Open was not in his hands, and he wanted to participate in these tournaments.
He was not allowed to enter the United States of America as he was not vaccinated due to his stand against the COVID-19 vaccine. Many fans have opined that this is the main reason why the Serb had to miss out on his bonus for the 2023 season.
Apart from Novak Djokovic, Ben Shelton and Cameron Norrie also missed out on their bonuses, according to the list that has been released. Despite not receiving any bonuses this year, the Serb leads the list of the 2023 prize money standings. He has earned a total of $15,952,044 while Carlos Alcaraz is right behind him with $15,196,504.
For the first time, this season four players passed the $10M total prize money mark in a season. They are Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner. Previously, there were four seasons where two players earned more than $10 million. This shows that the finances of the sport are getting better.
Fans react to ATP deducting 100% of Novak Djokovic’s bonus for 2023
Tennis fans have been furious regarding the ATP’s decision to deduct 100% of Novak Djokovic’s bonus this year. Many think that as the Serb’s case was rare, and he was not allowed to enter the USA for the Indian Wells and the Miami Open by the USA, he technically should be granted an ease in his penalty.
Novak Djokovic’s stand against the COVID-19 vaccine created a lot of controversy and he had to miss several major tournaments due to it. In 2022, he missed the Australian Open, the BNP Paribas Open, the Miami Open, and the US Open, while in 2023, he missed the Indian Wells and the Miami Open for his unvaccinated status.
