The World No. 3 Ons Jabeur stunned the tennis world by withdrawing from the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the Qatar Ladies Open. She has cited minor surgery as the reason for her necessary absence from both WTA 1000 tournaments.

She announced her decision to withdraw her participation from both the tournaments via social media. In an emotional message to her fans, she gave the reasons for taking such a decision without giving much detail about her surgery or the requirement for it.

“In order to take care of my health situation. My medical team have decided that I need to get a minor surgery in order to be able to be back on the courts and perform well. I will have to retire from Doha and Dubai and this is breaking my heart. I would like to say sorry to all the fans out there in the middle east that waited for this reunion. I promise I will come back to you stronger and healthy,” her caption read.

As the top-ranked Arab player, she is very popular in the Middle East. Hence, her absence in these tournaments will be very disappointing for the tennis fans around the world and also for those who wanted to flock to both the UAE and Qatar to watch her play in the stadiums.

The 28-year-old is one of the top-ranked women’s tennis players. She has also been one of the most consistent players this season. She is also the only Arab-African player to reach the final of a Grand Slam. In 2022, she reached the finals of both Wimbledon and the US Open. However, she could not win any of those tournaments. She lost to Elena Rybakina in the final of Wimbledon and to Iga Swiatek in the final of the US Open.

Many tennis legends believed that this could be the breakthrough year for Ons Jabeur. However, her performances in the Adelaide International 1 tournament and at the Australian Open have been sub-par. She reached the semi-final round of the Adelaide International 1 tournament but lost to the Czech Republic’s Linda Noskova.

At the recently concluded Australian Open, she managed to win her first-round match against Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek 7(1)-6(8), 4-6, 6-1. But in the second-round she was beaten by Marketa Vondrousova 1-6, 7-5, 1-6 and was knocked out of the competition.

She also lost valuable ranking points and slipped to the No. 3 position in the latest WTA rankings. Her fans, though, would expect that the Tunisian player would make a gutsy, reinvigorated return to the tour after her surgery.
