Roger and Mirka
Roger Federer and his wife Mirka both represented Switzerland at the 2000 Sydney Olympics as part of the Swiss tennis team. Federer was only 19 years old at the time and was ranked 46th in the world. He and his partner Marc Rosset won the gold medal in men’s doubles, while Mirka competed in women’s doubles with partner Emmanuelle Gagliardi. The Swiss women’s team, which also included Martina Hingis, reached the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
Roger Federer and Mirka Vavrinec first met at the 2000 Sydney Olympics where they were both representing Switzerland in tennis. At the time, Mirka was also a professional tennis player and was ranked as high as 76th in the world. According to Federer, they hit it off immediately and began dating soon after the Olympics. They continued to play on the professional tennis circuit together for a few years before Mirka retired due to a foot injury in 2002.
Recently a fan tweeted the Swiss team picture from the 2000 Sydney Olympics and asked, “Can you find Roger and Mirka in this pic of the Swiss team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000??” To which, former tennis player, Pam Shriver replied by spotting them and said, “Top right and lower left- playing cross court(ing) to each other.”
As a couple, Roger and Mirka are known for their strong bond, mutual respect, and unwavering support for each other. Mirka has been a constant presence at Federer’s matches, offering encouragement and advice, while also raising their four children. Federer, on the other hand, has been a pillar of support for Mirka, especially during her injury-plagued tennis career.
