Polish tennis sensation Iga Swiatek is set to clash with Mai Hontama in the second-round match at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2023 in Tokyo. The World No. 2 will play her first tournament since her fourth-round upset at Flushing Meadows a few weeks ago. The 22-year-old entered straight into the second round after being granted a performance bye.

French Open winner Iga Swiatek has claimed only 4 titles so far this year, as compared to the 8 she took home back in 2022. The Pole took time off the tennis court to rest and recuperate following her shocking fourth-round exit, where she lost to the World No. 20, Jelena Ostanpenko.

The 22-year-old has, however, shown off her incredible skills on the court this season. She successfully defended her title at the French Open, winning the finals against Karolina Muchova with a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 over three sets. She also performed well at other events and reached the quarterfinal round at Wimbledon, losing it to Elina Svitolina, who made her comeback this year. Swiatek also made it to the fourth round at both the Australian Open and the US Open this year but saw the face of defeat in both.

Japan’s Mai Hontama, on the other hand, achieved the career-high ranking of World No. 126 in singles this year in March. The 24-year-old mostly participates in the events organized by the ITF. The 24-year-old won her latest title in March at the Maribor Open. She made it to the WTA 500 event after making it to the semifinals at the WTA 250 tournament in Osaka earlier this month.

Iga Swiatek vs Mai Hontama: Prediction

Mai Hontama gave one of her best performances at a WTA event in Osaka, where she lost the semi-final to eventual winner Ashlyn Krueger. However, taking on World No. 2 will definitely be a daunting task for the 24-year-old. The Japanese needs to play to the best of her abilities to stand a chance against top seed Swiatek and her gameplay.
