Rafael Nadal‘s recent withdrawal from the Barcelona Open may have got fans worried, but superstar coach Patrick Mouratoglou is not worried at all. He is subtly positive that the 22-time Grand Slam champion will be completely fit to face the competition in the French Open.
The ‘King of Clay’ has stayed away from the clay surface till now this season. Even though, the clay swing began at the Monte-Carlo Masters, there is no where abouts of Rafael Nadal. He has not played a single match on clay surface this season.
Former coach of Serena Williams though, do not think that it may create much of difference for the Spaniard. He thinks that he may be deliberately missing the ATP events so that he can be completely fit for the important Major.
“Rafa has one goal, to win more Grand Slams than anyone else. He knows that his number one chance is the French Open and I think he told himself that he wanted to arrive in Paris in the best shape possible,” Patrick Mouratoglou said in a recent interview.

Patrick Mouratoglou believes Rafael Nadal is waiting for Roland Garros to step up
However, time is not on Rafael Nadal’s side. The 36-year old is carrying a worn-out body which is marked by scars of numerous injuries and surgeries over the course of a long and illustrious career. Patrick Mouratoglou doubts whether the 14-time French Open champion will be able to play at Roland Garros this time. And if he does, will he be able to win the title for the 15th time in his career.
“But it’s harder and harder every year because his body is very worn out, more than other players. He gave 1000% in training and matches. That means that his annual playing time is getting shorter every year. I think his goal is still Roland-Garros, which is why he’s been preparing on clay for a long time. He’ll be in shape tennis-wise. Will he be physically fit? I can’t say, it will depend on how he manages his injuries,” Patrick Mouratoglou continued.
“He’ll have to have a few matches, but I’m not really worried about him. He will be ready for Roland-Garros. The rest of the year is something else… If he does well at Roland-Garros, he’s done well for the year and he often plays pretty well on hard courts,” he added further.
The questions are many but except for Rafael Nadal nobody else may have the answers for it. However, tennis fans will be hoping that they get a chance to watch the vintage Rafael Nadal in his glory at the Roland Garros this time. And also even if it may be his last tournament, they would like his career to end on a positive note.
