Rafael Nadal is widely regarded as the clay maestro in the sport. The 14-time French Open champion has consistently won in Paris. Unfortunately, Nadal might be in a grave situation owing to his injury. The Spaniard sustained a severe hip injury during the Australian Open this year, leading to an early exit in the second round.

Aiming to surpass Novak Djokovic in the race for the most number of Grand Slam titles, Nadal desires might be stumped. At least Patrick Mouratoglou thinks so. The coach believes that Nadal’s age might significantly affect his physical health. According to him, ‘it is more and more difficult’ for Nadal to compete as time goes on, and other players could pose major obstacles.

Mouratoglou stated in the episode for the series, “Eye of the Coach”, “I’m not saying he won’t win this year. He can still win but he is getting older, he is more and more injured and it is more and more difficult.” While Djokovic is still in good form despite his age, Nadal is not in the same boat. This year’s French Open is definitely going to be an exciting affair, with Nadal not in his best form.

On his quest for his 15th title, Nadal is in bad shape. The Spaniard was hoping to return in time for the opening clay tournament at Monte Carlo. However, he pulled out at the last moment owing to his Melbourne injury scare. Hoping to taste success yet again, at the Barcelona Open, his chances at Roland Garros are in jeopardy.

Serena Williams‘ ex-coach also stated, “His preparation is never as good as he wishes. It was the same last year, and he still managed to win. He had so much margin and his margin is less and less important.” While the 36-year-old is planning to clinch another title in Paris, his injury could be a major detriment. However, Mouratoglou is confident that Rafa will take part in the Grand Slam, come what may.
