Nick Kyrgios was on a roll with his performances this year with a fair share of hits and misses but he had a disappointing and shocking elimination at the Cincinnati Open where he lost in the second round to Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in just 51 minutes of play. Coming into the tournament, he was fresh from a loss in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open to Hubert Hurkacz. He had won his first singles title of the year and his 7th ATP title overall at the Citi Open defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets.

He had made it into his first ever singles final appearance at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship but lost to the eventual winner Novak Djokovic. Apart from being a great player, he is a bit aggressive on the court which has cost him to lose crucial points of the match as he gets distracted easily in the match. He needs to keep a check in controlling his emotions if he wishes to continue to play big tournaments in the future.

Greg Rusedski, a former British and Canadian player, revealed that Kyrgios needs to focus on matters which are under his control, especially his physical fitness as he has little time to regroup and start preparations for the US Open as it is about to start in almost two weeks time. The Aussie was limping during the match against Fritz and had even resorted to medical assistance. He said “You’re worried about the knee physically. It’s a lot easier to do on grass courts than on hard courts. He’s improved out of sight but physically he’s got to get stronger

During his second-round match at Cincinnati, he kept complaining about some sort of disturbance from the audience at certain intervals due to constant movement from the spectators that put a break in his concentration levels and he started making unforced errors handing Taylor Fritz the much-required break. He kept abusing the chair umpire to remind him about the standards of the competition and went into a verbal spat with him and his below-par performance did not go down well with the audience. He further revealed “You can hear the boos around the stadium. They don’t feel like he gave it his best effort out there and we’re hoping the knee isn’t too serious but he’s got to show more.
