Chinese tennis player Qinwen Zheng has been the talk of the town in the tennis world ever since she won gold in the 2023 Asian Games women’s singles event. Zheng is currently the most promising tennis player from China and it is good to see that she is finally spreading her wings and utilizing her full potential.
Zheng defeated Zhu Lin 6-2, 6-4 in an all-Chinese final. The 21-year-old looked sharp from the very first set and got the result in the end. With this, she has now secured her spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics and will push for a podium finish there.
Thanks to her victory in the Asian Games, Qinwen Zheng is finally getting a lot of media attention. She recently signed a number of sponsorship deals and one of them includes McDonald’s. In fact, she even shot an advertisement with them, which has been released recently.
Talking about her season apart from the success in the Asian Games, her biggest achievement this season has to be reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open, where she lost to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. She also won the Palermo Ladies Open by defeating Jasmine Paolini in the final. Moreover, at the very beginning of the season, Zheng reached the semifinals of the Abu Dhabi Open, where she lost to Liudmila Samsonova.
Qinwen Zheng will face Maria Sakkari next in the Zhengzhou Open
Zheng will face tournament top seed Maria Sakkari in the round-of-16 of the much-awaited Zhengzhou Open. It is going to be an immensely tough match for the Chinese. However, for the fans, there could not have been a better round-of-16 match as both players are in sensational form.
Qinwen Zheng defeated Kateryna Volodko in the first round, while this will be the first match for Sakkari as she got a bye, being the top seed. The two players have played against each other a total of 2 times and both encounters were won by the Greek international.
Moreover, both of those matches were played on hard courts. It will now be interesting to see who wins the battle between the 24th-ranked player and the 6th-ranked player.
