The action at the Qatar Ladies Open 2023 got underway on February 13. It is a WTA 500 tournament, and this is the 21st edition of this competition which is being played in Doha, Qatar. However, the tennis action here is top level and already grabbed media headlines.
In its first round match, Maria Sakkari took on Qinwen Zheng in the first round of this tournament. In the same match, the Chinese player produced a moment of spectacle. The Greek player had won the first set 6-2 and in the second set, both players tied by winning 2 games each.
On the 20-year old’s serve, Maria Sakkari played a short rally and then suddenly played a drop shot. Qinwen Zheng had to rush to the net to play the ball. She managed to do so. The 27-year old then returned with a shot wide and led the Chinese player to chase it. However, the World No.24 stunned the World No.7 by playing an incredible tweener. The whole stadium rejoiced and cheered at the shot.

Qinwen Zheng won the second set 6-3. However, she lost the third set 3-6 and was knocked out of the tournament. Maria Sakkari will play Ekaterina Alexandrova in her second-round match here.

Social media is in love with Qinwen Zheng’s shot
Qinwen Zheng is having a busy year. She started her 2023 season by participating in the first WTA tournament of the season. She played in the Adelaide International 1 tournament. Here, she reached till the second-round of the tournament by beating Anett Kontaveit in the first round but could not pass the challenge of Victoria Azarenka and was knocked out.
After qualifying to play in the main draw of the Adelaide International 2 tournament, she reached till the second-round. She was able to win against Shelby Rogers but had to retire against Petra Kvitova in the second-round. At the Australian Open 2023, she stormed into the second-round of the competition but lost to Bernarda Pera. However, at the Abu Dhabi Open, she reached till the semi-final round of the competition but could not pass the challenge of Liudmila Samsonova.
She may have lost her first round match against Maria Sakkari at the Qatar Ladies Open. However, she did win hearts of many tennis fans all around the world with her tweener. Qinwen Zheng is currently ranked as No.24 in the WTA singles rankings. However, she has shown significant improvement this season.
