Tennis icon Rafael Nadal was honored with the AS Sports Award recently in a ceremony held at Palace Hotel in Madrid. This is the sixth time when the Spaniard received this award. Along with him, many other Spanish athletes were also honored for their contribution and fantastic display in respective sports all around this year. Besides him, superstar football manager Carlo Ancelotti and Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois also received their awards.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion received this award for his fantastic run this season. He won two Grand Slam titles this year- the Australian Open and the French Open. He also finished the year as World No.2 in the ATP Rankings. Diario AS is a Spanish sports magazine.

When Rafael Nadal began his sporting career, even he would not have thought that he will one day be considered first among greats. He won his first Grand Slam title, i.e., the French Open at the age of 19 years in 2005. Since then he amassed numerous trophies and Grand Slam titles.

This was the first year when the Spaniard broke into the Top 10. After this, he continued to dominate the sport. He has now won the highest number of Grand Slam titles in male tennis. He is also the only player to have stayed in the Top 10 for 900 weeks consecutively.

American tennis legend Jimmy Connors is ranked No.2 and stayed in ATP Top 10 rankings for 788 weeks. The 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer is ranked No.3 and stayed in ATP Top 10 rankings for 734 weeks.

The Swiss legend is followed by two Americans 8-time Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl and 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras is ranked 4th and 5th with 619 weeks and 565 weeks of experience of staying in the Top 10. The 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is currently ranked 6th with 555 weeks.
