Jannik Sinner has etched his name in history today. The World No. 4 has made one of the most difficult comebacks and has done it in the finals of a Grand Slam.
Up against former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the title decider of the 2024 Australian Open, the Italian had lost both the opening sets.

With the trophy slipping from his hands, he was left with very little opportunity to make a mistake. Instead, he brought out his clutch game. He did not concede any breakpoints and took the sets deep. This template worked for him in sets 3 and 4, as he put pressure on the Russian, who found himself serving at 4-5.
With a game away in both sets, the fourth seed made the best use of crowd support to break Medvedev. The break also meant he won the two sets and forced the fifth and final set. With Medvedev struggling physically, Sinner earned an early break to clinch the championship point at 6-3.
He won the title with the scoreboard reading 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 after 3 hours and 45 minutes. The haunting memories of the 2022 final defeat to Rafael Nadal might have started for Medvedev as they reached the fifth set.
The Spaniard realising the difficulty of the task the 22-year-old had pulled off was quick to send across a congratulatory message immediately after the finals.
Awesome Jan, well done. Great tournament your first Grand Slam tournament!!! Greetings to you, your team, your family and all Italy that won today with you

Daniil Medvedev’s poor luck at the Australian Open continues
While it was all merry for Sinner, one has to feel for Medvedev. The Russian was playing in his third Australian Open final in the last four years. Yet, he has still not managed to win the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup.

He first lost to Novak Djokovic in 2021 with the Serb winning the finals 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. With Nole deported out in 2022, it was Nadal who made the finals against the Russian. In what was one of the longest AO matches, Nadal won the Major 2-6, 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5.
With Sinner now winning it this year, the 2021 US Open champ is now 0-3 in finals at Melbourne Park. His record in Grand Slam finals further plummets down to 1-5.
Both Sinner and Medvedev will retain their respective rankings. Sinner breaches the 8000-ranking point mark with 8310 points to his name. Medvedev missed on the chance to replace Carlos Alcaraz (9255 points) as World No. 2 and now has 8765 points. Djokovic continues to top the charts with 9855 points.
