Despite having a great season, things haven’t been ideal for Rafael Nadal in the last couple of months. Recovering from his foot injury, he reached the semifinal at Wimbledon and was on course to gun for a third consecutive major title but he was forced to withdraw due to an abdomen injury and took nearly a month to recover from it.

He played just one match in the lead-up to the US Open and lost it in Montreal. Ahead of the US Open, a hiccup in his personal life struck him as his wife was admitted to a hospital due to some serious pregnancy complications. While the baby is out of danger, his wife is still under medical observation and if everything goes as planned, should recover well in the coming days.

But according to the latest reports from Marca, the state of Rafa’s wife, Maria Francisca Perello’s pregnancy is delicate and she will only be discharged from the hospital if Rafa’s sister feels like is the right time. While childbirth should go ahead without any risk to life, doctors believe that the baby will continue to gain weight, and to avoid doing that, the Nadal family should be ready for premature birth.

While Rafa is yet to speak on this matter, it is obvious that he will not be in a 100% sane state of mind. His presence still in New York indicates that the situation back home is under control but this premature birth may force him to withdraw from the US Open given the seriousness of the situation. It is almost confirmed that if there are any serious problems back home due to the pregnancy, Rafa will fly back immediately.

Similar to the first round this week, Nadal lost the first set of his second-round match against Fabio Fognini. He was trailing 2-4 in the second set too but bounced back strongly to win the set 6-4. It was all Nadal’s match right from there and wrapped up the match in four sets 2-6,6-4,6-2,6-1. He will now face French veteran and old rival Richard Gasquet in the third round on Saturday.
