There are a few wonderful moments in sport and then a few like the one Camilla Giorgi produced which attract nothing but criticism. The Italian was playing the legendary evergreen Venus Williams in a first-round match at the Birmingham Classic.

At 4-3 40-30 in the first, Williams attempting a forehand lost her balance and fell over. Most would have expected the Italian to stop the point out of graciousness or quietly finish the point at the most. However, Giorgi showed an entirely different approach.

She not only continued but also celebrated without looking at her opponent. The tennis world was extremely unhappy with what they saw. It also caught the attention of Venus’ sister Serena’s former coach Rennae Stubs and tennis legend Martina Navratilova. Both called out Giorgi and expressed their disappointment towards the situation.

The first reaction came from Stubs who had this to say, “Camilla Giorgi just yelled Si when @Venuseswilliams just fell over and screamed! I mean wtf !!! I honestly think that could be the lowest moment of her career!!!! And you NEVER want to see this face coming at you now! Come on Vee!” One can clearly see her anger as she didn’t expect this from the Italian.

Navratilova responded to this by saying, “Serves her right- Venus kicked her butt anyway!!! How disgusting from Giorgi if that is how it happened.” Both used harsh words as they lauded Williams for notching up a fantastic win.

Once a dominant force in the women’s game, Venus Williams still feels she has tennis left in her. Despite a fair amount of failures in the last few years and multiple injury issues, the American is still competing and pushing herself to the limits. She reminded many of the ‘vintage never give up Venus’ as she fought hard through her way to victory against Italy’s Camilla Giorgi.

She won the first set in a tight tiebreaker and then lost the second 6-4. The last set then also went to the tiebreak. Venus held her nerve as she took the tiebreak 8 points to 6. This is her first top-50 win in the last 4 years and she would hope to find a few more before she hangs her boots. Venus has now reached the second round of the Birmingham Classic and would love a deep run here before the Wimbledon.
